Dental Health Initiative

Agroexport de Sonora SA de CV's Oral Health program is designed to reduce oral diseases, prevent complications, and minimize the disability that can result from lack of preventative treatment and care. The project's aim was to benefit all workers who require dental services. The primary needs identified were dental cleanings and tooth extractions. A total of 278 workers were provided access to an exam and follow up care if 9 workers that required filings for cavities were treated. The Fair Trade Committee of Agroexport de Sonora SA de CV identified through an needs assessment that lack of financial resources has been the key reason as to why many have not had recent dental care. The most common condition that was diagnosed was dental caries, which begins by affecting the crown of the tooth and, in advanced stages, damages the roots. The second most prevalent issue was periodontal disease, which starts as gingivitis (gum inflammation) and can progress to the destruction of the bone supporting the teeth. The goal of the program is to promote, protect, and restore the oral health of workers, ultimately improving their quality of life.
