Sustainable Cocoa Farming

Many small-scale cocoa farmers in the rainforest region of Ucayali, Peru, struggle with low yields and declining crop quality due to poor soil health, high fertilizer costs, and limited knowledge of sustainable farming practices. Without the adequate inputs and training, these farmers face persistent challenges, including pest pressure, declining productivity, and lower incomes. In addition, this region faces several challenges, including a low awareness among producers about proper fertilization processes and rising fertilizer prices in the local and national markets. The project addresses these risks by promoting the use of organic fertilizers, which help reduce pests and diseases in the crops and increase production volumes. This proactive approach aims make cacao farming in the region sustainable and possible to pass to future generations. The Fair Trade Committee decided to direct their Community Development Funds towards enhancing the quality of cocoa that they produce. This long term and ongoing project will positively impact all 225 farmers of the cooperative and their families. The focused efforts are aimed at increasing production volumes and generating higher incomes for the producers. This, in turn, aims to improve the quality of life for the producers and their families. To implement this project, five sacks of organic fertilizer are distributed to each producer, including guano de isla, rock phosphate, and dolomite. These inputs improve soil fertility, reduce disease pressure, and support higher yields. To further support this initiative, the cooperative contributed their own investment of $7,800 USD to this project to combine with the Community Development Funds received in 2024 of $41,000 USD for a total of $ $48,800 USD as the total project investment. The success of this project is not just in numbers but in the real stories of on the ground transformation and a sense of community and shared purpose. Producers have reported their experiences of improved crop quality and increased yields, which have translated into better incomes and improved living standards. The initiative is expected to increase cocoa productivity by 20% in the cocoa plantations that the cooperative members manage. This in turn boosts household incomes, which directly translates to an improved standard of living according to these cocoa farmers.
