Investing in Long Term Resilience

For smallholder coffee farmers, thriving in a competitive global market means more than just producing quality beans—it requires strong business skills and strong communities. In 2023, farmers of this Colombian cooperative allocated their Community Development Funds to a wide range of projects focused on the long-term economic, social, and environmental well-being of their farming community. One of the investments was in the Women’s Committee Program, which supports gender equity by providing leadership training and project funding for women cooperative members, helping them build their skills, grow their businesses, and become leaders within their communities. Another major focus was an investment in traceability: a geo-referencing project that digitally mapped member farms, providing precise data for land management, production planning, and traceability. It is a critical step in ensuring the cooperative's supply chain can offer the level of sourcing information demanded by supply chain partners and ethical consumers alike. Recognizing the need for financial stability, the cooperative also utilized a portion of the Community Development Funds to provide direct financial support to members, helping stabilize incomes in volatile markets, rewarding the hard work of farmers and reinforcing their commitment to the cooperative. These, among many other investments, reflect a wide-ranging and comprehensive approach to operating and developing the cooperative, and ensuring its economic and social resilience long into the future.
