Health Campaign for Eye Exams and Glasses Distribution

For many Mexican agricultural produce workers, preventive healthcare is often out of reach due to high costs and limited access. A recent survey of workers at Crisp Greenhouses highlighted this gap, revealing a lack of regular medical checkups and basic health management. To address this, workers voted to launch a multi-year health initiative using Community Development Funds, starting in 2023 with comprehensive health screenings. These included 29 pap smears, 7 prostate exams, 30 vaccinations, and 84 free pairs of eyeglasses. In 2024, the focus has shifted to vision care. The fair trade committee partnered with local public health officials to hold a preventative medicine fair in the Janos community of Sonora, Mexico, where the farm is located. The fair covered topics like sexual and reproductive health, chronic disease prevention, and mental health. Optometrists conducted eye exams, identifying 128 workers and family members in need of corrective lenses, and those lenses were provided. By investing in preventive care, the project aims to reduce long-term health risks, support early detection, and improve overall well-being through treatments and interventions that might seem basic but can be life-changing.
