"Mejoramiento de Vivienda"- Housing Improvements

Edulag, a Fair Trade Certified agave farm in Jalisco, México has a goal of providing housing improvements for as many farmers and their families as possible in this ongoing project aimed at transforming sub-standard housing into dignified homes. The housing improvements target existing homes in poor and unsanitary conditions. The goal is to create livable and sanitary living spaces that can accommodate the family size and promote an overall sense of well-being.
Five years ago, Edulag’s Fair Trade Committee conducted a Needs Assessment that identified employees were experiencing a severe lack of safe and sanitary living conditions and were at risk for infection and illness. Through the democratic process, the employees voted to spend their Fair Trade Community Development Funds to improve their housing conditions. The assessment found homes with one or two bedrooms for families of six or more members, unfinished interiors, deplorable bathroom conditions, and roofs constructed with reeds and tiles. Since the project start in 2021, living spaces have been improved with construction materials such as plaster and ceramic floors. Construction includes refurbished bathrooms, and additional bedrooms to address overcrowded living and sleeping areas. So far, the project has already reached 120 workers, offering them the means to make lasting, dignified improvements and creating safer and healthier living conditions for families.
Four years later, the project is still ongoing, helping more workers improve their quality of life by enabling families to plaster walls, install ceramic flooring, upgrade bathrooms, and add additional rooms. In addition, this project addresses critical issues of health, safety and dignity for low-income families. By enhancing housing conditions, the home improvements help prevent the spread of infections and provides a more stable and secure environment for children to grow and thrive. Functional and stable housing also empowers families by giving them the means to improve their own living conditions, fostering a sense of pride and ownership.
The "Mejoramiento de Vivienda" project is a powerful example of how targeted interventions can transform communities. By addressing fundamental needs, it not only improves physical living conditions but also enhances the social and emotional well-being of the residents. This project stands as a testament to the positive change that can be achieved through dedicated efforts and community support.
