Healthcare Projects

In response to critical healthcare gaps in their region, workers at this Brazilian factory voted to invest over US$80,000 in Community Development Funds in a comprehensive, multi-part initiative to support the health and well-being of workers and their families. With long wait times and limited access to local healthcare, particularly in specialized care, the factory's Fair Trade Committee structured the investment in four complementary projects to address both immediate and systemic needs. The first project, Specialized Medical Care , gives employees and their dependents partial subsidies for consultations and lab tests across 12 medical specialties, including ophthalmology, dermatology, and pediatrics. In partnership with local clinics, the program dramatically cuts wait times - from eight months in the public system to just two weeks - allowing workers to access preventive and diagnostic care more easily. So far, over 400 beneficiaries have accessed services under this initiative, which will continue through 2026. The Pharmacy Voucher program, the second project, recognizes the burden of out-of-pocket medication costs helps offset monthly pharmaceutical expenses - a major source of financial pressure for nearly half of surveyed workers. The third project covers annual blood tests for workers, covering basic lab tests that are often skipped due to cost. This effort ensures that financial barriers don’t stand in the way of routine labs, a basic element of preventative health care. Finally, to expand access for the broader community, a fourth project, Clinic Expansion and Equipment, is the build of a new wing for of the local municipal clinic. The upgraded facility now serves additional residents and supports a more robust local healthcare system. Together, these projects reflect a holistic approach to worker well-being—addressing short-term medical access while investing in long-term infrastructure and affordability.
