Ultrasound Device

In the rural community of Morro Reuter in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, accessing ultrasound exams used to mean traveling over an hour to another city, a burden of time, cost, and strain for patients and the local health system. Long wait times and logistical hurdles delayed diagnoses and increased expenses for the municipality. To address this, workers approved the use of $31,000 in community development funds to purchase a modern ultrasound machine for the town’s public clinic. With high-resolution imaging, the device enables a wide range of tests to be performed locally, quickly and accurately. The new service is available to all 7,150 residents of Morro Reuter and now attracts patients from surrounding communities, generating extra revenue for the local health system. The project cut municipal healthcare costs and has made critical diagnostic services available for the entire community.
