Housing Improvements

Many Nicaraguan workers at Ingenio San Antonio lack the financial means to make critical repairs and improvements to their homes. Typical housing conditions include leaky roofs, cracked walls, and unfinished floors—problems that can undermine health and safety.
To address these concerns, workers voted to invest Community Development Funds in a housing improvement project that provided 2,444 workers with construction materials tailored to the needs of their homes. The project included bulk purchasing and negotiated pricing to maximize impact, ensuring each worker received high-quality materials such as cement, roofing sheets, and structural supports.
The results have been immediate and meaningful for workers and their families. Ernesto José Pereira Pavón, who has worked in irrigation at the farm for over 40 years and was able to replace his leaking roof thanks to this project. "The project has been wonderful, because each family decides what we need most for our home, whether it's a roof bean, a bathroom, or something else."
