Appliance Distribution

The workers of SiCar SA de CV, a citrus producer in Colima, Mexico identified in their Needs Assessment that access to basic household appliances would provide significant benefit to their families. SiCar SA de CV's Fair Trade Committee invested $271,770 USD of Community Development Funds to address the the needs of the workers and forward looking to contribute to the improvement of the quality of lives of the 700 workers and their families. The project included the physical distribution of the applicances and education on the use and care of the equipment. By providing appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, and stoves, the project significantly reduces the time families spend on labor-intensive chores. This frees up valuable hours for education, work, and family life. Refrigerators play a crucial role in preserving perishable food and essential medications, helping to prevent foodborne illnesses and reduce spoilage. In addition, access to washing machines enhances household sanitation. However, the gift of time is powerful, it translates to an increased agency by providing the freedom to choose how to live, work, and grow.
