Long Term Resilience

Price volatility, climate change, limited access to infrastructure, and market barriers are challenges for small holder farmers in the Indian coffee region of Kerala. Wayanad Organic Society (WOS), which is comprised approximatively 2,000 farmers gain access to minimum prices and additional premiums for community development through Fair Trade Certification. WOS is investing Community Development Funds to build resilience and long-term sustainability within their farming community. Over the course of 2024, WOS budgeted $53,280 towards several initiatives that include support for certifications such as organic and Fair Trade, building knowledge and capacity through technical training, updated post harvest equipment, and human health services such as group health insurance, medical treatment and marriage support. In addition, WOS dedicated funds for infrastructure support, professional administrative services and efficient logistics for transport to reduce spoilage. Specifically for p ost-harvest infrastructure , tarpaulin and drying mats for India's humid climate were distributed to help preserve bean integrity, reduce waste, and improve market value. Trainings included sessions that emphasized agricultural sustainable practices, pest management, and post-harvest techniques, which are critical for improving yield and quality. In a sector often vulnerable to external shocks, WOS’s strategic use of Fair Trade Community Development Funds is a model for resilience to build capacity, dignity, and hope. Shared prosperity is valued for long-term health and sustainability.
